Handbags – The History

handbagIt is hard to trace the history of handbags. They have been in use since early times when man started living in civilization. The early handbags were made from natural products like leaves. Leather handbags came into use around the same time in the form of animal hide. Not much record is available to suggest what and how these bags and pouches were used.

The first documented use of handbags comes from the Egyptian hieroglyphics of the 14th century. Men in that era used to wear small pouches around their waist. These pouches were normally used to carry money. With passage of time, the practicality of carrying handbags had dawned on both men and women alike. The 1400s saw the advent of the first designer handbags of sorts. The rich could afford to place jewelry and other semi-precious stones on their handbags as a sign of their prosperity. Handbags rich in embroidery were also used as status symbols. Fashion handbags with numerous variations in design were what the rich would seek.

Many portraits of those times depict the rich and powerful with such designer handbags hanging from their waist. Leather handbags, which were cheaper and more durable than silk designer handbags, were used by common people on the streets. With time, the usage of handbags diminished, as men’s trousers came into fashion with attached pockets. This appeared to be a more viable option than keeping the hands engaged in carrying a bag. Handbags gradually disappeared from sight.

The 1800s saw the emergence of handbags once again. With the advent of fashion and fashion accessories, it became all the more necessary for women to carry handbags with them. Known as reticules, these handbags were used to carry items of personal nature such as perfumes, fans and other fashion accessories.

The term “handbags” was used only in the 1900s, where fashion reached a pinnacle. Leather was also complemented by other materials including plastic and wood due to shortage of leather and metal during World War – II. Manufacturers started experimenting with different materials and designs to create handbags of all hues, shapes and sizes.

Brand names started emerging towards the mid and later half of the 1900s. A Gucci, Prada, or a Chanel handbag was what most women would like to be associated with. Louis Vuitton and Fendi handbags were in great demand too.

Handbags matching the color and style of a woman’s dress are offered along with dresses. Business handbags are in vogue too, where business executives are normally seen carrying a bag when on official errands. Handbags have become a part of our accessories and will continue to do so owing to their practical use.
